Don't Insulate Your PTAC with Dust. Entry for February 13, 2008
With energy cost rising, it is more important than ever to make sure your PTACs (Package Terminal Air Conditioner) is clean. Over time dust inevitably settles upon the condenser coils and this dust acts as an insulator, preventing the coils from doing their job which is to transfer heat to the environment. Imagine wrapping a blanket around yourself on a 100 degree day while exercising. you will eventually overheat and pass out. Much like you, your PTAC will run hotter and have to work harder to transfer this excess heat through the dust. Unfortunately, when a compressor burns out from the extra heat the whole unit is generally scrap. I have heard stories of how these units have run for over 20 years if kept clean and free of dust, and I have heard nightmarish stories of hotels never cleaning their units and needing to replace them after 5 years. So keep your units clean, if you are uncertain of how and when your units need to be cleaned contact your local Johnstone Supply Sales Representative for a low cost cleaning kit and instructions.Timothy Klein (608) 931 0345
